He brings with him more than 35 years of service as both a faculty member and administrator during his career. Dr. Pettit served as Chancellor of the University System of South Texas, President of Southern Illinois University, and, for eleven years, President of Indiana University from where he retired in 2003.

In addition to his service inside the academy, Dr. Pettit has participated in many supporting associations. He has been engaged at the national, regional and state levels. He was an active participant in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and served on multiple committees including the National Science Foundation (Liaison), Governance, State Relations, International Programs, Professional Development, Academic Affairs and the Committee on Policy and Purposes. In 1991 Dr. Pettit received the "Meritorious Service Award," conferred by American Association of State Colleges and Universities "for distinguished leadership in support of the Association's goals in higher education."

He has served as chair of the Commission on Leadership for the American Council on Education, (ACE), president of the National Association of (University) System Heads, and on many national and state boards and commissions in higher education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Pettit has been active as speaker and panelist for a number of higher education organizations. He has authored and co-authored a number of articles in political science and higher education. He is scheduled to release a memoir in 2009 that reflects on evolving American political history from 1937 to 2003 and the effect it has had on the academic community.

Dr. Pettit has been actively involved in more than 100 searches across multiple university systems and brings an impressive depth of understanding of the critical nature of the senior executive roles within colleges and universities. He uses this understanding and his experience to assist institutions in their search for the next generation of leadership in higher education.
